How to play Backgammon
Start Backgammon by looking at the playing area and its controls. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Read the objective before making your first input. Use the example below to understand a decision.
Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.
Keep the aim in sight
Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules. Notice the feedback after each input.
Your goal
Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.
Step by step
- Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
- Enter barred pieces first.
- Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
- Bear off only after all pieces reach home.
Controls
Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. Keep the playing area visible while using these controls. Make sure you are interacting with the game rather than the surrounding page.
A useful example
When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.
Watch out for this
An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
